Justin Bartha of the now cancelled show The New Normal, spoke to the The Huffington Post about the cancellation:

“It’s kind of bittersweet… Well, I wouldn’t call it bittersweet, but I have mixed feelings because I do think that I wasn’t necessarily expecting it to get picked up, but I do think that we accomplished quite a bit in one season,” he explained. “I’m absolutely proud and honored to have been a part of that series and to have worked with Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler and all of the cast and crew who did a beautiful job. When we started the show, we had a very specific conversation that our goal was to portray a homosexual couple in a realistic matter on network television, and I think we achieved that goal.

“The NBC executives get a lot of critique from the press, but they should be applauded for putting us on the air in the first place, because we still have a long way to go with equality in this country and around the world. Just read the comment section on your website and you’ll see people spewing hateful language and hateful words about all types of people. So we already know that we have a long way to go for that and I’m not saying that The New Normal was a lightning bolt to the cause, but I do think it was a drop in the bucket and I’m proud to be a part of it.” He added, “On The New Normal the thing I was probably more proud of than anything else is that we were just trying to put positive energy out there in the world, and we got to do it for one season and that’s more than most.”

American tennis player and professional hottie, Andy Roddick, expressed his support for a campaign called ‘Athlete Ally’ to encourage all colleagues coming out of the closet.

Homophobia in sports is one of the hottest topics of the past week: a couple of days ago Jason Collins became the first openly gay player in the NBA and the support has weighed as much as the criticism. From the homophobic tweets to cruel and menacing, it has become clear that the fight is far from over, but thanks to gestures like Roddick, it seems that the end is possible.

Roddick’s statement reads as follows:

“Yesterday was a great day for athletes worldwide. The courage and leadership of Jason Collins to come out reminds me how important it is for an athlete to be honest with yourself. As an ‘Athlete Ally’, I support any athlete who is comfortable and confident being themselves and making sure that all people – both players and fans – are welcomed and included in tennis.”

Quite a message from an elite athlete hetero, reminding us that although much remains to be done, we are on the right track, and visibility will give way to normal. Bravo, Andy!

With support from Prime Minister John Key, and a 77-44 vote in the New Zealand parliament, gay marriage became legal and kicked off celebrations around the country. New Zealand is the first Asian-Pacific country to legalize gay marriage. and the first in the Asia-Pacific. More than 1000 Australian same-sex couples say they will cross the Tasman to tie the knot. Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Rodney Croome said “Now that marriage equality is only three hours away there will be a flood of couples flying to New Zealand,” said . Although Wednesday’s vote put the bill into law, gay couples who want to marry will have to wait a while. The Department of Internal Affairs, which handles births, deaths and marriages, has been given four months to prepare the procedures and licence forms. Bravo New Zealand!

Cindy McCain, the wife of 2008 Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain, is set to appear in “8″, a play about Proposition 8, the US state of California’s controversial ban on same-sex marriage, at the Phoenix Herberger Theater Center’s production of the play, along with her daugher Meghan. (Both seen here in their NoH8 photos by Adam Bouska.) The Senator’s wife will play one of the plaintiffs in the Prop 8 case, and appearing alongside her will be the wife of Phoenix Mayor, Greg Stanton, Nicole.

“8″ takes a peek inside the trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Hollingsworth v. Perry), the federal court case for marriage for gay and lesbian Americans. “8″ is the real-life story of Kris & Sandy and Paul & Jeff, two loving couples who want to get married but can’t. Together with attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson and a host of expert witnesses, they take aim at Proposition 8, a discriminatory law that took away the right for LGBT couples to marry in California in 2008. Written by Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar), “8″ is based on the actual words of the Perry trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. As “8″ flashes in and out of the Perry court, watch both sides present the best evidence, arguments and witnesses for and against marriage for gay and lesbian Americans. We learn about the historical context of marriage from expert testimony; see the human cost of discrimination; uncover the arguments used to justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples; and see how the case affects the plaintiffs and their kids.

The all-star cast has included such superstars as George Clooney, Martin Sheen, Brad Pitt, Jamie Lee Curtis and MANY others. ).

Sara Gilbert shared big news on The Talk today… she and her girlfriend, rock musician Linda Perry, are engaged. Gilbert (who played Darlene on the classic TV show Roseanne) is host and executive producer of The Talk. Perry has written hot songs for Christina Aguilera, Pink and Gwen Stefani. Linda surprised Sara with the proposal over a picnic in the park on Monday’s show. Gilbert tells The Talk about the proposal – “We go to a park, and we have food and we’re eating it, it’s really sweet and there’s this guy sitting playing guitar, like a street musician, and he starts playing this song that we love. … I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s so weird, this is so magical and amazing. So that ends, and she’s like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna ask him to play this other song,’ but this other song is really obscure and this guy wouldn’t know it, but magically he knows it. … And suddenly the people picnicking next to us pull out string instruments from under the blanket and walk over and they start playing Love Song (by the Cure). Then she goes to her backpack and she pulls out some T-shirts, and the first T-shirt says ‘Will,’ and then she puts on another T-shirt that says ‘You,’ ‘Marry,’ ‘Me’ and the last one is a question mark. And then she goes to her backpack and gets a ring.” She adds: “So then she says, ‘OK, turn around,’ and I turn around and our mums are there and a couple of friends. … So I think that’s it and it’s the most amazing proposal ever and then … this guy walks up and she’s like, ‘This is John Waite,’ and he starts playing Missing You.”

Wow, what a proposal. Congrats to both of you amazing ladies.

“In recent years, a wave of businesses have demonstrated their support for same-sex couples, sometimes drawing the ire of customers and investors. J.C. Penney (JCP, Fortune 500) featured a family with two moms in its Mother’s Day advertisements last year and two dads for Father’s Day. The ads received immediate backlash from the family advocacy group One Million Moms, which called on its members to boycott the store and send back its catalogs. The retailer didn’t back down. Also last summer, Target (TGT, Fortune 500) sold a line of gay pride-themed T-shirts and donated $120,000 of proceeds to the Family Equality Council, an advocacy group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Last June, Oreo posted a photo of a cookie with rainbow colored filling — a symbol for the gay rights movement. The popular creme sandwich cookie made by Mondelez International (MDLZ) paired the photo with the captions “pride” and “proudly support love.” And last month, more than 100 of the nation’s largest companies filed a brief with the Supreme Court opposing Proposition 8, which prohibits same-sex marriage in California. This week, the country’s highest court heard two cases: Defense Of Marriage Act, which denies federal benefits and recognition to married gay couples, and Proposition 8. Companies including Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), Facebook (FB), Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), Morgan Stanley (MS, Fortune 500), Nike (NKE, Fortune 500), Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500), Levi Strauss & Co. and American International Group (AIG, Fortune 500) signed the brief and called rights for LGBT couples “a business imperative.” The brief says laws such as Prop 8 could force gay workers out of states that don’t recognize same-sex marriage, interfering with companies’ ability to hire and compete. ”Laws that prohibit marriage by two people of the same sex discriminate against … millions of employees, as well as their customers, clients and vendors,” the companies wrote. Businesses don’t have much to lose by sticking up for gay rights. Already, 53% of Americans support same-sex marriage, a sentiment that’s even higher among the coveted under-30 consumer. It also makes business sense. Same-sex couples have been shown to out-earn and outspend opposite sex couples. According to a 2012 study from Experian Marketing Services, the typical household income for a married or partnered lesbian woman is $7,200 higher than that of a married or partnered heterosexual woman, and $21,500 more for a gay man. Same-sex couples spend more on their weddings, too, despite having fewer guests, according to survey conducted by TheKnot.com. ”Corporate support for the LGBT community largely preceded public support for it,” said Gary Gates, a demographer at the Williams Institute, which studies legal issues that affect the LGBT population at the University of California at Los Angeles Law School. “Corporate America perceived that there was a big consumer market.”

All steps in the right direction while we wait for the Supreme Court rulings.

Boosting over 330 days a year of sunshine, Palm Springs is a dream destination any time of the year. For the gay traveler, it is a sure bet destination for fun in the sun. Palm Springs’ large LGBT community is one of the top cities in the United States with the highest concentration of same-sex couples. The resident gay population is now estimated at 40%. With a recent surge in gay owned businesses, including gay hotels and resorts, gay restaurants, and gay events (including the infamous White Party and Dinah Shore weekends), Palm Springs is an international LGBT destination.

Adding to the landscape of the gay get-a-way is the new Random Haus Palm Springs (“RH”), which opened February 15th, 2013. RH is a bit of new concept for the area, as it is a Condominium Hotel for the LGBT community, offering fractional ownership of units as well as hotel stays. The two-story building is mid-century modern, which was rebuilt and remodeled from the ground up, with a lot of attention to detail. Located off San Lorenzo Road, next to the Warm Sands area, it is close to all that Palm Springs has to offer.Palm Springs, California. Boosting over 330 days a year of sunshine, Palm Springs is a dream destination any time of the year. For the gay traveler, it is a sure bet destination for fun in the sun.
The 12 very spacious “units” are impeccable, with luxurious furnishings and linens, custom tile, top notch appliances and beautiful views of the pool and surrounding mountains. The grounds are well laid out, with the units all entering off the pool area.

In addition to the heated pool and spa, there is a sauna, entertainment area for BBQ’ing or socializing, and a meandering stream that runs around the property, complete with Koi.

Each unit is named after a Hollywood celebrity, with names like ‘The Crawford’, ‘The Garland’ and ‘The Monroe’. We stayed in ‘The Reynolds’, which boosts: 1160 square feet; master bedroom with king dual-side pillow-top bed, closet, and private bath; guest bedroom with queen dual-side pillow-top bed and closet; second full bath; 42″ HDTV’s in each bedroom and the living area; dining area with 4-person table; full kitchen; and sitting area with custom furniture and work desk.

The Reynolds is one of the pet-friendly suites, and came complete with plush pet bed and doggie treats, to make the pooch feel right at home. Elegant, yet comfortable, with plenty of room to spread out and relax. There was a back patio alongside the stream, that was a relaxing spot for coffee. The beds were very comfortable and the robes beyond plush. (They do sell the robes – and you’ll want one!) This really is a home away from home and you will want to settle in and stay a while.

The RH staff was cordial, attentive and knowledgable… from a pre-arrival phone call to inquire about our pet, to arranging for a taxi, to delivering our continental breakfast to our suite in the morning. Things ran exceptionally smoothly for a property that had just opened a mere two weeks earlier.

A few items for the traveler to note: (1) the RH is pet friendly, which is a plus in my book, and while there is no additional fee for Fido or Fifi, there is a $250 refundable pet deposit due upon check-in; (2) the RH has a swimwear “dress code” for the pool area – in other words this is not a clothing optional hotel; and (3) for a limited time, Random Haus Palm Springs has Grand Opening pricing at rates considerably less than the standard rates. Visit Random Haus for rates and more information.
